A wine is only ever as good as the people behind it and Bago Vineyards has a passionate and dedicated team behind every step of the winemaking process.

GREG HAYWARD - Chief Winemaker

Greg started his involvement in the wine industry working as an apprentice cooper (barrel maker). As time passed Greg moved to the Hastings area where he started as a cellar hand at Cassegrain, then the regions largest winery, before moving to Hope Estate in the Hunter region where he further honed his wine making skills. Wanting to return to the maritime climate and country hospitality of the Hastings, Greg began working with Bago Vineyards in 2003 and has now spent three vintages producing some of our best wines to date. Under Greg’s careful guidance Bago Vineyards now processes all their own grapes on site as well as making wine for several smaller vineyards across Australia. Greg is a passionate wine maker and an invaluable part of our team and is always available to discuss our latest vintage news.

GEMMA PORTER - Assistant Winemaker

Gemma completed a degree in food technology at the University of Western Sydney before becoming part of our team in 2003. Gemma has had several years experience in the wine industry in both the Hastings River Region and Western Australia. In her spare time Gemma helps run a saw-mill and three young children. Gemma is available and only too happy to talk food and wine on Tuesdays.

THE MOBBS FAMILY

Jim and Kay Mobbs purchased their extensive property in the late 70’s for the farming of grain crops. In 1985 the first Chardonnay grapes were planted and the area of grape plantings has increased over the decades to include 12 Hectares of diverse grape varieties. Jim and Kay’s initial involvement with farming Soya beans, Maize and other small crops provided the perfect opportunity to hone their horticultural skills before dedicating all their efforts towards the cultivation of grapes for premium wine production. Before purchasing the property Jim finished his study at Hawkesbury Agricultural College (now the University of Western Sydney), and worked as a soil Conservationist. Kay has also maintained a lively interest and steady commitment to the medical industry as well as raising three children, Ian, Kellie and Steven.

POPPY - The Driving Force/Chief Port Tester

If it wasn’t for Jim Mobbs Senior’s insistence over 22 years ago grapes would never have been planted on the property in the first place. You will find him in and around the vineyard 7 days a week, tinkering on some project or another, from extending sheds to fixing light bulbs. With out his support Bago Vineyards wouldn’t be where it is today. Come and enjoy a yarn with Poppy on any afternoon of the week at port o’clock at Cellar door.

IAN ADAMS - Sales and Marketing

Ian Adams has been associated with the wine industry since the early 1980's when is his former life as an International Trade Banker assisted Winery's in the Hunter and Griffith regions with wine exports.

Seeking a sea-change in 1989, Ian took up a managerial position with nearby Cassegrain Vineyards. After assisting Bago Vineyards with the official opening of our Cellar door in 1996 Ian soon became a regular at Bago in the Marketing and Promotions role. The many events held at the vineyards including our monthly jazz days (now in their ninth year) are the product of Ian.

Ian now concentrates on our wholesale and corporate customers and can be contacted on 04 2825 6282.

BEV NEWTON - Cellar Door Sales

Bev Newton is our girl Friday (and Monday) in the Cellar Door. Formerly with Rosemount Wines at Denham in the Upper Hunter for 35 years, Bev joined the crew at Bago Vineyards in 2002 when she and her husband moved to nearby Lorne.

Bev's experience in the packaging/bottling side of the production process has been invaluable since joining the crew. Bev also works in the Cellar Door and greets our many visitors with her friendly smile.
